Eastern Anatolia is high, sparse and far from the coast — most of it above 1,000 m, with Mount Ararat at 5,137 m. Towns are 2–4 hours apart and many sights sit off any bus route, so a car booked in advance is the difference between seeing the region and seeing bus stations. Pick one or two bases (Van for the lake and Akdamar, Kars for Ani, Erzurum for the gateway) and day-trip outward.

High plateau (Erzurum, Kars): Snow lies long and deep; winter nights well below freezing, and Palandöken and Sarıkamış ski from about December to March.
Lake Van basin (Van, Tatvan): Milder than the plateau but still high; the lake is soda-salt and does not freeze, so waterbirds stay.

Best months are June–September. Summer heat on the plateau can be harsh and the wind blows; spring and autumn are short and cool. Winter travel is possible on the main highways but not on minor mountain roads.
