East London
Give East London 1–2 nights only if you are driving the Wild Coast or the R72; with no car, base on the Quigney seafront and taxi everywhere.
East London is the Eastern Cape's only deep-water port and the practical western gateway to the Wild Coast: the N2 runs north to Mthatha and Durban and west toward Port Elizabeth, and the N6 climbs to Bloemfontein. The city itself is a beach-and-suburb place with a small museum, a Victorian house and two game reserves on its edge. Most travellers use it for one or two nights to break a drive, not as a destination in its own right.

There is no useful public transport for visitors: rent a car at the airport or book taxis by phone. Minibus taxis run to Mdantsane and the townships but are not set up for tourists. Distances are short — seafront to Hemingways Mall is roughly 15 minutes by car.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say hello and ask how someone is before any request; avoid: Launching straight into a question
- Handshakes: Three-part African handshake with friends; a normal handshake with strangers; avoid: Refusing an offered hand
- Elders: Use Mr/Mrs or 'Mama', 'Baba' respectfully in townships and rural areas; avoid: First names with older people you have just met
- Braai invitations: Bring meat or drinks, and arrive on 'African time'; avoid: Taking over the fire
- Photos: Ask first, especially in townships and villages; avoid: Photographing children without a parent's permission
- Politics and race: Ask questions and listen; avoid: Lecturing on history or crime
Scams and watch-outs
- Do not walk the city centre or beachfront after dark; take a taxi even for short hops.
- Keep car doors locked and bags out of sight at traffic lights; use guarded parking.
- Swim between the flags — the Indian Ocean here has strong rip currents.
- Bluebottle stings are common after onshore winds; vinegar stations sit at the main beaches.
- Card skimming and ATM followings happen: use bank ATMs inside malls in daylight.
East London is fine by day in the beach and mall suburbs; the city centre and beachfront are not night-walking areas, and the main risks are petty theft, ATM followings and rip currents at unguarded beaches.
