East Kilbride is Scotland's first post-war new town, 8 miles (13 km) southeast of Glasgow, built from 1947 to rehouse the city. It is a working town of roundabouts, a large covered shopping centre and industrial estates, not a sightseeing destination. Its one draw is the National Museum of Rural Life, a working farm and museum 2 miles (3 km) out. Most travellers see it as a day trip from Glasgow, or use its chain hotels as a cheaper bed with a 35-minute train into the city.

Get around
The town is built around roundabouts and dual carriageways; walking between areas is slow and unpleasant. Buses run from the town-centre bus station (24 h) to most estates, and the rail line links East Kilbride and Hairmyres stations to Glasgow Central every 30 min. A car makes the museum, Calderglen and the countryside practical; otherwise plan on buses plus taxis.

- Trains run roughly 06:00–23:00 to Glasgow Central; after that it is a taxi or the night bus at weekends.
- The Wee Bridge on Newhousemill Road is about 6 ft (1.8 m) wide and regularly catches drivers; do not take a wide vehicle over it.
- Chain hotels on the bypass have little within walking distance: check what is open near yours before booking.
A quiet commuter town and one of the safer places around Glasgow; the real risks are road crossings on fast dual carriageways, uneven paths in the glen parks, and the usual weekend night-out drink crowd in the town centre.
