The East Coast is Peninsular Malaysia's island and rainforest side: Pulau Perhentian, Redang and Tioman for diving, Taman Negara for old forest, and a conservative Malay heartland in Kelantan and Terengganu where the weekend runs Friday–Saturday. It is highly seasonal — the northeast monsoon closes most island resorts from November to February. Come April to October, book island beds early for June–August, and treat the coast as two separate trips: the northern islands from Kota Bharu or Kuala Terengganu, and Tioman from Mersing or Singapore.
