Skip East Brunswick as a sightseeing stop: use it as a cheap hotel base off NJ Turnpike Exit 9 for New Brunswick and Rutgers, 1–2 nights.
East Brunswick is a suburban township of about 48,000 people in Middlesex County, New Jersey, built up as a commuter bedroom community after the 1950s. It has no historic downtown core and almost nothing that draws a traveller on its own. Its practical value is beds: a cluster of chain hotels on Route 18 and at the Tower Center, minutes from NJ Turnpike Exit 9, Rutgers University and New Brunswick's station. Come for a bed and a car park, not for the town.

Get around
A car is effectively required. Route 18, US Route 1 and the NJ Turnpike (Exit 9) are the main roads, and almost everything sits on or off them. NJ Transit buses (routes 811, 815, 818) run within the township but stops are spread out and service is infrequent. Walking along Route 18 is possible but the roads are state highways with high speed limits and crossings are dangerous. Bicycle lanes exist in places but you mostly share the road with cars.
