Eaglehawk Neck
Teralina / Eaglehawk Neck
Base here one night if you want the Tessellated Pavement and Tasman Arch at sunrise; otherwise drive through on the way to Port Arthur.
Eaglehawk Neck is the narrow isthmus that once closed off the Port Arthur convict site, about 50 km southeast of Sorell on the Arthur Highway (A9) and 19 km north of Port Arthur. The Dog Line, the Tessellated Pavement and the sea cliffs of Tasman National Park sit within a few minutes of each other, but there is almost no public transport and few beds, so it works as a single overnight stop or a half-day on the way south.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport to the sights; without a car you are stuck on the highway.
- Tasman National Park entries need a Tasmanian parks pass — check the official parks site for current prices.
- Cliff edges near Tasman Arch and Devils Kitchen are unfenced in places; keep back from wet rock.
- Mobile coverage is patchy away from the highway; download maps before you leave Sorell.
- Wildlife on the road at dusk and dawn — drive slowly after sunset.
Very safe for a rural stop. The real risks are unlit winding roads, wildlife at dusk, unfenced cliff edges and cold water — swim at patrolled beaches only, and there are none here.
