Dzūkija is Lithuania's sandy south: pine forest, lakes and the country's biggest city in the same region. Vilnius is the transport hub and a city break on its own; Druskininkai is the spa and lake base further south. Trains and buses reach the main towns, but the small sights — Merkinė, Daugai, the hillforts — need a car. Two nights in Vilnius plus one or two in Druskininkai covers the region without rushing.
