Dushanbe is a green, wide-avenued city that works in the cool hours: Rudaki Avenue and the parks in the morning, the museum and a tea house through the heat, the bazaar early — and the airport is close, but check your hotel desk is staffed when you land.

Dushanbe's sights lie along one long avenue, and the summer heat is severe. The trips that go wrong walk the avenue at noon in July, photograph something they should not, or plan the Pamir Highway from a three-night city break. Four clusters cover a first visit: Rudaki Park, the museum and opera, the Rohat tea house and Mehrgon bazaar. Hisor and the Fann Mountains are trips away from one kept bed.

Dushanbe International Airport (DYU)
DYU to the centre: one ride-hail car or an airport taxi, 15–35 minutes for about 5 km — the risk is not the ride but a night arrival with no driver and a hotel that has no staffed desk.

Language

Tajik is a form of Persian written in Cyrillic; Farsi and Dari speakers understand much of it. Russian is the second language for most educated people. In Gorno-Badakhshan people speak Pamiri languages (Shughni, Wakhi, Rushani and others) at home. English is rare outside hostels and young people.

  • Greeting: Hand on heart, 'assalomu alaykum'; avoid: Offering a hand to women first
  • Pamiri house: Shoes off, sit on the raised platform where shown; avoid: Stepping on bedding
  • Dress: Long trousers and sleeves; avoid: Shorts in villages

Red lines

  • Do not photograph government buildings, the presidential complex, police, bridges or military sites.
  • Mosques and madrasas: shoulders and knees covered; ask before entering.
  • Ask before photographing people, especially women.

  • Police document checks with 'fines': Carry copies of passport, visa, GBAO permit and registration; stay polite, ask for a receipt.
  • Driver renegotiation mid-route: Agree price, stops and days in writing via a known agency or guesthouse.
  • Unofficial money changers: Use banks.
