Dunmore
Skip Dunmore as a base: it is a 5-minute drive from Scranton, so sleep in Scranton and come here only for a meal or a walk.
Dunmore is a small borough of about 14,000 people immediately northeast of Scranton in the Coal Region of Pennsylvania. It has no major sights of its own; its value is a compact main street of family-run shops, diners and bars, plus cheaper motels and quick access to I-81 and I-84. Treat it as a half-day add-on to a Scranton trip, not a destination.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Bus service stops in the evening and does not run on Sundays or holidays: plan the last ride or drive.
- Taxis must be booked by phone; there is no street hail.
- Winter ice on pavements and Route 6/I-81 is a real hazard from December to March.
- Most shops and diners close early; do not count on a late dinner outside the bars.
Dunmore is a low-crime small town and walking the centre is fine in daylight. The real risks are winter ice, deer and trucks on I-81, and driving after a night in the Corners bars.
