Dunhuang is a Silk Road oasis town in Gansu, built around two set-piece sights: the Mogao Caves, 25 km out, and the Singing Sand Dunes with Crescent Lake at the town's edge. Both need timed tickets and half a day each. The town itself is small, walkable and cheap, and most travellers arrive by train or plane from Lanzhou, Xi'an or Urumqi.

Scams and watch-outs
- Mogao Caves cannot be visited independently: entry is by guided tour on a dated ticket, and English departures are limited — book on the official site first, then plan the rest of the day.
- The Yardang National Geopark has been closed at times and hours change often: confirm before paying for a western-route tour.
- Yang Pass closes from 1 Jan to mid-March.
- The airport has no taxi stand; pre-book a pickup.
- Dunhuang is a branch-line rail stop: many trains, especially west to Xinjiang, leave from Liuyuan, a 1–2 h drive away.
- Desert temperature swings are large; carry water and a layer for the evening.
Dunhuang is calm and low-crime; the real risks are desert heat and dehydration, unlicensed tour touts, and long drives on the western route. Carry water, use hotel or official shuttle transport, and agree the fare before you get in a taxi.
