Dungarvan
Dún Garbhán
Give Dungarvan 2 nights: one for the town and castle, one for the Greenway or the Copper Coast. Skip it as a day trip from Waterford — the bus eats 2 h.
Dungarvan is a small harbour town at the head of a shallow bay in west County Waterford, with a 12th-century shell-keep castle, a free county museum and the 46 km Waterford Greenway running through it to the beach at Clonea. Two nights covers the town and one full day out; a car unlocks the Ring Gaeltacht and the Copper Coast Geopark, which buses only partly reach.

Get around
The centre is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes. The Greenway is the traffic-free link to Clonea and the coast, on foot or by hired bike. Buses reach Tallow, Lismore, Ardmore and Tramore but run a few times a day at best, so a car is the practical way to see the Ring Peninsula, Stradbally and Bunmahon.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, first names quickly; avoid: Over-formality; it reads as coldness
- Conversation: Banter, weather and sport; self-deprecating humour; avoid: Opening with Northern Ireland, religion or the Famine
- Pubs: Buy your round; chat at the bar; avoid: Leaving a round without buying one
- Identity: Say Ireland, or the Republic when you need to distinguish; avoid: 'Southern Ireland' and calling it British
- Driving: Lift a finger from the wheel to thank drivers who pull in for you; avoid: Stopping on narrow bends for photos
Scams and watch-outs
- The Quays carry through traffic and the pavements are narrow: watch children and bikes near the bridge.
- Buses are sparse and Sunday services thin out — check the last return before you set out.
- The Greenway is shared by walkers and cyclists; keep left and call out when passing.
- Many kitchens stop serving by 21:00 outside summer, and some places close Monday and Tuesday.
- Atlantic weather turns fast: rain gear beats an umbrella on the coast.
Dungarvan is a low-crime town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are fast traffic on the Quays, unlit Greenway sections after dusk, cold water and rip currents at Clonea, and Atlantic weather that changes within the hour.
