Dunfermline was Scotland's effective capital from the 11th century and seven kings are buried in its abbey, including Robert the Bruce. It became a city in 2022 and is now an Edinburgh commuter town of about 55,000. The abbey, the park and the Carnegie sites sit within 15 minutes' walk of each other, so a day covers the core; the coast and the bridges are separate trips.

Get around
The centre is walkable: abbey to park about 10 min, abbey to Carnegie's birthplace about 10 min. Buses 19, 33 and 83 link the town with Halbeath park-and-ride; bus 89 runs hourly Mon–Sat to Inverkeithing and North Queensferry. Taxis are cheap for short hops.
