Dufur
One night is enough: see the museum and the wheat country, sleep at the Balch Hotel, then move on to The Dalles or Hood River.
Dufur is a wheat-and-orchard town of about 600 people on US 197, 22 km south of The Dalles. It is a single-street stop with one historic hotel, one saloon and a log-cabin museum, and it works best as a quiet night between the Columbia Gorge and the dry country toward Maupin. Come for the August Threshing Bee or the December Country Christmas, or as a slower base than Hood River.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Very limited food and fuel: the market and saloon keep short hours, so arrive with what you need.
- Summer afternoons often pass 32 °C and there is little shade on US 197.
- Winter can bring ice and snow on US 197 and the side roads; check conditions before driving.
- Cell coverage is patchy outside town.
Dufur is a quiet farm town and personal safety is not the issue. The real risks are the drive on US 197, summer heat, winter ice and the lack of late food, fuel and phone signal.
