Best areas to stay in Dubrovnik by traveller type

Dubrovnik is small: the old town (Stari Grad) sits on a flat grid around Stradun, with Pile at the west gate and Ploče on the east side. Everything else spreads out along the coast — Gruž harbour to the north-west, then Lapad and Babin Kuk further out. Where you sleep decides whether you walk to dinner or take a bus.

For a first trip, the old town or Ploče gives you the postcard on foot. Families and beach-first travellers do better in Lapad or Babin Kuk. Budget travellers should look at Pile and Gruž, where prices drop and buses still reach the walls in 10–20 minutes.

Use the old town as your reference point. Pile is the western gate, where the airport shuttle and city buses stop. Ploče is the eastern side, above Banje beach. Gruž is the port, about 3 km north-west, where ferries and intercity buses arrive. Lapad and Babin Kuk continue another 2–4 km west along the coast.

Distances are short but hilly: Ploče and the old town have steps, and Lapad's streets climb away from the water. If you have luggage or limited mobility, check the exact address for stairs before booking.

Dubrovnik's season runs roughly May to October, with July and August the busiest and most expensive. Winter is quiet and many old-town restaurants and shops keep shorter hours or close; check opening times for anything you plan around. Hotel and apartment prices in the table above are 2026 estimates for high season.

Two costs catch people out. First, the old town is inside a pedestrian zone, so a taxi can only drop you at a gate — you then walk, sometimes with steps. Second, parking is scarce and expensive; if you rent a car, confirm that your accommodation has a space before you book.

Dubrovnik airport (DBV) is about 20 km south-east of the city. The airport shuttle runs to Pile and Gruž, and taxis and transfers cover the same route. From Pile you can walk into the old town; from Gruž you are at the ferry and bus hub.

Ferries and catamarans from Split, Hvar and Korčula dock at Gruž, as do intercity buses. If you arrive by sea or long-distance bus, staying in Gruž or Pile saves a transfer. Within the city, local buses link Gruž, Lapad and Babin Kuk to Pile and the old town; buy tickets from a kiosk or on board where available.

Book 3–6 months ahead for July and August, and earlier for the old town, where beds are limited. If you want the old town experience without the noise, stay in Ploče and walk in. If you want a beach holiday with the city as a day trip, base in Lapad or Babin Kuk and use the bus.

Cruise ships fill the old town between roughly 10:00 and 14:00 in summer, so plan your wall walk and Stradun time for early morning or late afternoon. For a longer stay, a Lapad or Gruž apartment with a kitchen usually costs less per night than an old-town room and gives you space.

Travellers with limited mobility should favour Lapad and Babin Kuk, which are flatter, and check each address for steps. Solo travellers often prefer the old town or Pile for walkability and hostels; families tend to settle in Lapad and Babin Kuk.
