Dublin in May: what to expect

May is statistically Dublin's driest and sunniest month, though 'dry' in Ireland means fewer wet days, not guaranteed sunshine. Expect a mix of bright spells and passing showers, with the east coast getting the best of the country's weather. Daytime highs sit around 15 °C and nights around 7 °C, so a warm afternoon can turn cool quickly once the sun drops.

The big change is daylight. By the end of May Dublin gets roughly 16 hours of light, with sunrise before 05:30 and sunset close to 21:30. That means long evenings for walking the city, sitting outside a pub, or taking a coastal trip to Howth or Dún Laoghaire after dinner. UV is still low, but the sun can burn on a clear day.

May sits in the sweet spot before the summer rush. Crowds are medium: Trinity College, the Guinness Storehouse and the Book of Kells draw steady queues but rarely the July–August crush. Prices are medium too, with hotel rates noticeably lower than June, July or August.

The exception is the first May bank holiday weekend, when Dublin hotels fill and rates spike. If your dates are fixed around it, book accommodation two to three months ahead. Outside that weekend, you can often book a week or two out and still find good value, especially midweek.

Dublin's festival calendar is lighter in May than in March or June, but there is still plenty: the Dublin Dance Festival usually runs in May, and the city's trad music and pub session scene runs year-round. Check listings closer to your dates, as exact dates shift each year.

With long daylight and mild weather, May is a good month for both city and coast. In the city, the Guinness Storehouse, Trinity College and the Book of Kells, Dublin Castle and the National Museums are the core first-timer stops. The National Museum of Ireland and the National Gallery are free.

For the coast, take the DART to Howth for cliff walks and seafood, or to Dún Laoghaire and Dalkey for harbour views. Further out, Glendalough in the Wicklow Mountains is a straightforward day trip and the weather is usually at its best in May. The Boyne Valley, with Newgrange and Trim Castle, also works well as a day out.

Pack for four seasons in one day. A waterproof jacket with a hood is essential; an umbrella is useful but struggles in coastal wind. Bring layers you can add and remove, comfortable walking shoes for cobblestones, and sunglasses — May has the most sunshine hours of any month in Dublin.

Evenings stay cool, so a light jumper or fleece is worth having. If you plan coastal walks or a day in Wicklow, add a warm mid-layer and a hat.

April is cooler and wetter but quieter and cheaper, with Easter as the main spike. June brings the longest days of the year and the best of the west before school holidays, but crowds and prices rise. July is peak season: book cars and B&Bs early, and expect Galway to fill for the Arts Festival and Races.
