Dublin in December: what to expect

Dublin sits in the driest part of Ireland, but December is still a wet, dark month. Expect short days, a low grey sky and rain arriving in bands off the Atlantic rather than settling in for the whole day. Wind off the bay makes 8 °C feel colder on O'Connell Street than the number suggests.

Frost and occasional sleet are possible at night, but lying snow in the city is rare and rarely lasts. The bigger planning issue is daylight: if you want to see Trinity College, Dublin Castle and the cathedrals, start early, because light fades by about 16:10 mid-month.

December splits into three different cities. The first three weekends are Christmas-shopping season: Grafton Street and Henry Street are packed, hotel rates in the centre peak, and restaurants need booking. From about 27 December the city empties as people go to family homes, and rates drop sharply. On 25 and 26 December almost everything stops.

Book accommodation two to three months ahead for the shopping weekends and for New Year's Eve. Flights into Dublin are usually cheapest in the first week of December and again between Christmas and New Year, when demand falls away.

Dublin's December is mostly lights, markets and music rather than one big festival. Winter lights switch on in the city centre in late November and stay through the month; the Christmas market at Dublin Castle runs in the run-up to Christmas. Check exact dates and opening times before you go, as they change each year.

Pub sessions run all month and are the most reliable evening plan. New Year's Eve brings a street celebration in the city centre, with details announced late in the year.

Treat December as a city month. The National Museum, National Gallery, Chester Beatty and the Book of Kells are indoor, warm and open through the holidays apart from 25–26 December. Pubs with music, the Guinness Storehouse and the Jameson distillery are the other reliable December stops.

Day trips shrink in December. Glendalough and the Wicklow Mountains are reachable but the valley paths are wet and daylight is short; Howth and Dún Laoghaire are fine for a bracing walk and a pub lunch, not for a beach day. Coastal and island trips further west are better left to another month.

Pack for wet and cold, not for snow. A waterproof jacket with a hood beats an umbrella in Dublin wind, and shoes you can walk in for hours matter more than anything else. Layers work better than one heavy coat because pubs, museums and buses are warm.

Add a warm hat and gloves for evenings, a small day bag that keeps rain off a camera or phone, and a spare pair of shoes if you plan to walk a lot. If you are driving outside the city, check road and weather warnings before setting out.

November is darker and wetter, with fewer events and cheaper rooms. January is similar to December but quieter and cheaper once New Year is over, and the days start to lengthen. February stays cold and wet, with a bank holiday on the first Monday.
