Drummore
Go for one night as a base for the Mull of Galloway and Logan gardens, and only with a car: bus 407 runs five times a day Monday to Saturday, with no Sunday service.
Drummore is Scotland's southernmost village, on the Rhins peninsula in Dumfries and Galloway, with a population of about 500. It is a one-night base, not a destination in itself: the reason to come is the Mull of Galloway headland, the Logan gardens and the coastal trail. You need a car or a bike to see any of it.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No Sunday bus: plan Saturday or a car for weekend travel.
- Mobile signal is patchy; EE 4G is the only reliable carrier, and coverage fades away from the main road.
- Fuel and groceries: fill up and shop in Stranraer, the village store is small.
- Narrow roads on the run to the Mull; pull in for locals.
- Midges on still evenings near the shore in summer.
Very low crime; the real risks are single-track roads, weather that turns fast on the cliffs, and no Sunday bus or reliable phone signal.
