Dresden is Saxony's capital on the Elbe, rebuilt after the 1945 bombing into a compact Old Town of palaces, museums and the Frauenkirche. Two nights covers the core; the Elbe valley, Pillnitz and Saxon Switzerland fill a third day. Most visitors stay on the left bank in the Altstadt or across the river in Neustadt.

Get around
The Old Town is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Trams and buses cover the rest; buy a day ticket if you make three or more rides. The S-Bahn links Hauptbahnhof, Neustadt and the airport. A car is a liability in the centre.
