Downpatrick
Dún Pádraig
One night is enough: see the cathedral and St Patrick Centre, then use it as a base for Inch Abbey and the coast. Two nights only if you have a car.
Downpatrick is a small County Down town of about 11,500 people, 21 miles south of Belfast, built on its claim to St Patrick's grave. The town centre is walkable in an afternoon; the prehistoric and early Christian sites around it need a car or a bus. Most travellers come for a half-day from Belfast or as a stop on the way to Newcastle and the Mournes.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Many outlying sites are free and open 24 h but have no facilities, lighting or shelter: go in daylight.
- Sunday buses are thin or absent on several routes (17, 19, 14): check the day before you rely on one.
- The heritage railway runs only on advertised running days, not daily.
- Rowallane Garden and some sites close earlier in winter: check before travelling.
- Rural roads are narrow with no footpath: walk facing traffic and wear something visible.
A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are rural roads with no footpath, thin Sunday buses and wet, dark winter afternoons. Standard UK precautions apply.
