Downey is a Gateway Cities suburb of about 111,000 people, 13 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles, built on aerospace money and the Apollo capsule. Its two real draws are small and close together, so it works as a half-day between LA and Long Beach rather than a destination in its own right. Most travellers pass through by car on I-5 or I-105.

Get around
A car is the practical option: sights sit 1–3 mi apart along Lakewood and Firestone Boulevards with no useful walk between them. LA Metro bus lines run along both boulevards and connect to the Green Line, but trips take two to three times as long as driving. Rideshare is easy to summon and cheap over these short hops.
