Dourados
Use Dourados as a logistics base for the southern Pantanal, not a destination: one night to restock and sleep, then head to Bonito or a Pantanal lodge.
Dourados is the second-largest city in Mato Grosso do Sul and a regional agricultural hub. Most travellers pass through on the way to the Pantanal or Bonito. The city has a functional airport, a modern shopping mall and a Saturday-night market (Feira) with local produce and Japanese-Brazilian food. Sights are few: recreational parks and squares. Plan for a single night or a meal stop.

- Water
- Do not drink tap water; filtered water is provided in most homes and hotels.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, hug or cheek kiss (one in São Paulo, two in Rio); avoid: Being stiff with new acquaintances
- Gestures: Use thumbs-up freely; avoid: The OK hand sign (it is rude)
- Language: Try Portuguese; say obrigado/obrigada; avoid: Defaulting to Spanish
- Time: Expect relaxed social punctuality; avoid: Being late for tours and flights
- Beach: Bring only a towel, cash and a copy of your ID; avoid: Leaving things unattended
Scams and watch-outs
- The Feira runs Saturday night and Sunday morning only; plan your schedule around it if you want to see it.
- No major tourist attractions: Dourados is a logistics stop, not a sightseeing destination.
- Cross-border shopping trips to Ponta Porã / Pedro Juan Caballero (Paraguay) are common but require no formalities for the border town; going further into Paraguay means finding immigration offices yourself.
Dourados is generally safe for a Brazilian city of its size. Standard precautions: avoid walking alone at night in poorly lit areas, keep valuables out of sight, and use ride-hailing apps after dark.
