Dorrigo
Give Dorrigo one full day and one night: Dangar Falls and the national park Skywalk in the morning, then the town sights; check the steam railway's opening days before you build the day around it.
Dorrigo is a small plateau town on the Waterfall Way (B78), 30 min up the escarpment from Bellingen and about 1 h from Coffs Harbour. It is a waterfall-and-rainforest stop, not a town with a nightlife: one night covers Dangar Falls, the national park Skywalk and the steam railway collection. Most travellers come by car; a booked bus runs the Waterfall Way corridor.

Get around
The town itself is walkable in 10–15 min end to end. Dangar Falls, the national park and the steam railway site are outside town and need a car; the booked Dorrigo Transit service runs the Waterfall Way corridor (Coffs Harbour–Urunga–Bellingen–Thora–Dorrigo–Ebor–Armidale) but does not serve the park or falls. The Waterfall Way climbs and twists between Bellingen and Dorrigo, so drive it in daylight.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Waterfall Way can close after heavy rain or landslips: check the Live Traffic NSW app before you commit to the escarpment.
- Fog and wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk; drive the B78 in daylight.
- Mobile coverage is patchy on the plateau and in the national park: download offline maps.
- Small-town hours: many kitchens stop serving by mid-afternoon and some places close early in the week.
Dorrigo is a small, low-crime country town and safe to walk after dark. The real risks are the escarpment road in rain or fog, wildlife at dawn and dusk, and cold wet weather any month of the year.
