Dornbirn
Base here 1–2 nights if you want Vorarlberg's gorge, cable car and museums without Bregenz prices; skip it if you only have one day in the region.
Dornbirn is Vorarlberg's largest city and its shopping and commercial centre, sitting between Lake Constance and the Bregenzerwald. It is not a headline sight, but it has a compact old town, a strong industrial-heritage museum cluster, a cable car up the Karren and the Rappenloch gorge within a short bus ride. Most travellers use it as a cheaper, quieter base for the Bregenz and Feldkirch area, or as a half-day stop on the Arlberg rail line.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: 'Grüß Gott' or 'Guten Tag' entering shops and huts; handshakes; avoid: Walking in without a greeting
- Titles: Use Herr/Frau and academic titles in formal settings; avoid: First names with older strangers
- Coffee houses: Linger; call the waiter 'Herr Ober'; avoid: Expecting fast service
- Punctuality: Be on time; avoid: Arriving late to concerts: doors close
- Quiet: Keep voices down on public transport; avoid: Loud phone calls in trains and trams
- Mountain trails: Greet other hikers with 'Servus' or 'Grüß Gott'; avoid: Leaving gates open on pastures
Scams and watch-outs
- Many sights sit outside the centre: plan on a bus, not a walk.
- The Rappenloch gorge and Karren cable car close in winter and after heavy rain: check before you go.
- Sunday shopping is limited to the station and a few shops; the Wochenmarkt runs Wednesday and Saturday mornings only.
- Advent market and Fasching fill the Marktplatz: book beds early.
Dornbirn is a low-risk city: the real hazards are mountain weather, wet gorge paths and fast traffic on the A14. Use 112 for anything urgent and 140 for mountain rescue.
