Dordrecht
Give Dordrecht one full day and one night from Rotterdam (15 min by train): walk the old harbour, climb the Grote Kerk tower, then leave.
Dordrecht is one of the oldest towns in Holland, built on a river confluence where the Merwede, Oude Maas and Noord meet. Its medieval centre survived the Second World War almost intact, so the appeal is the streets themselves: roughly 900 listed buildings, old harbours, almshouse courtyards and a handful of good small museums. It is small, flat and walkable, and it works best as a one-night stop or a day trip from Rotterdam rather than a multi-day base.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. Buses cover the suburbs and the station; Qbuzz runs the regional network. Bikes can be rented near the station (from about €9.50 a day, more with gears). The waterbus to Rotterdam is part of the public transport system and costs about the same as the train.
