Use Dongducheon as a half-day or one-night stop for Soyosan hiking, not a base: Seoul is 1 h 15 min by Line 1 and has the beds.
Dongducheon is a small satellite city 40 km north of Seoul, built around a US Army base and ringed by mountains. Soyosan and Tapdong Valley are the reasons to come; the town itself is markets and motels. One night is enough, and most travellers see it as a day trip from Seoul on Line 1.

Get around
Line 1 (the dark-blue line) runs through five stations in the city: Soyosan, Dongducheon, Bosan, Dongducheonjungang and Jihaeng. Local buses cover the valleys but many routes run only a few times a day, so check times in advance on the Gyeonggi bus information service. Taxis are the practical option for Tapdong Valley and the mountain trailheads.

Scams and watch-outs
- This is an active military zone: photographing soldiers, gates or equipment can get you stopped. Do not point a camera at the camps.
- Some buses run once a day; check the timetable before you set out, or you may be walking back.
- July and August bring the heaviest rain of the year (over 400 mm in July); trails and valleys flood quickly.
- Motels quote check-in from 17:00–18:00 and check-out 11:00–13:00; a daytime room is a separate deal.
- English is limited outside the base area; have addresses in Korean for taxi drivers.
Very safe for a Korean city; the real risks are mountain trails in rain, infrequent buses, and cameras pointed at military sites.
