Useful apps for Dominican Republic: transport, maps, translation

For most trips you need four apps: WhatsApp, Google Maps, Uber and a translation app. WhatsApp is how hotels, drivers and tour operators actually talk to you, so set it up with your home number before you fly. Uber works in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Punta Cana and Puerto Plata. Outside those cities, plan on a local taxi, a hotel transfer or a coach, and confirm the price before you get in.

Buy a Claro or Altice prepaid SIM or eSIM at the airport or a mall if you want data without roaming; bring your passport. Download offline maps for the beach areas you plan to visit, because signal drops on the Samaná Peninsula and rural roads.

Set up WhatsApp first. In the Dominican Republic it is the default channel for confirming a transfer, checking a tour pickup or asking a hotel a question. Many small operators will not answer email quickly but will reply on WhatsApp within minutes. Save your hotel and driver as contacts so you can find them fast.

Google Maps is reliable for main roads and city streets, less so for small beach access roads and some rural routes. Download the offline map for each region before you leave Wi-Fi, and treat drive times on the Samaná Peninsula and mountain roads as optimistic. For long-distance coaches, book through the operator rather than a maps app.

Uber is the simplest way to avoid haggling in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Punta Cana and Puerto Plata. Where Uber is thin, ask your hotel to call a trusted taxi, or use the transfer arranged by your resort. Local ride-hailing alternatives come and go; check what is working in your city when you arrive rather than relying on an app you installed at home.

A translation app matters more outside resorts. Spanish is the working language; English is common in Punta Cana resorts and tourist areas but not everywhere. Download the offline Spanish pack and use the camera mode for menus and signs. For money, cards work in cities and resorts, but keep pesos for local transport, small shops and tips.

Use this as a pre-flight checklist. Everything here is free to install; the only cost is data, which a local prepaid SIM or eSIM covers.

Screenshot your booking confirmations and your driver's number; you may not have data in the first hour after landing. Keep a small amount of pesos in cash for taxis, tips and small vendors, since not every local driver takes a card. If you rely on Uber, check the app at your destination before committing to a late-night arrival in a town where coverage is uncertain.

Roaming from a US or European plan often works but is expensive; a local prepaid SIM or eSIM is usually cheaper for a week or more. Resorts have Wi-Fi, often slow in rooms, so do not count on it for maps or calls.
