Airports and who they suit

The Dominican Republic has several international airports, and the right one depends on where you are sleeping, not on which is biggest. Punta Cana (PUJ) sits beside the Bávaro resort strip in the east. Santo Domingo Las Américas (SDQ) serves the capital. Puerto Plata (POP) and Santiago (STI) cover the north coast, including Cabarete and Sosúa. La Romana (LRM) is the closest field to Bayahibe and Casa de Campo.

Picking the wrong airport can add three to five hours of road time. Punta Cana to Santo Domingo is roughly a half-day transfer; Santo Domingo to the Samaná Peninsula is similar. If your trip mixes the capital with a beach, fly into one airport and out of another when the fare allows it.

Flights by origin

From the United States, the Dominican Republic is a short-haul destination. Nonstop service runs year-round from Miami, New York, Boston, Atlanta, Charlotte and other East Coast cities, with more routes added in winter. Flight time is roughly 2 hours from Miami and 4 hours from New York. Fares swing widely by season: December to April and the July school holidays are the expensive windows.

From Canada, Toronto and Montreal have nonstop and one-stop options, with the most capacity in winter. From the UK and Ireland there is no regular nonstop service; the usual routings are via Madrid, Miami, New York or a European charter. Expect 9–13 hours door to door. From Australia and New Zealand you will connect at least once, usually in the US or Europe, and the trip runs well over 24 hours.

Fares are cheapest booked two to four months out for low season (May–June, September–November, outside holiday weeks). Package fares that bundle a Punta Cana hotel with the flight often beat booking separately, especially from Canada and the UK.

  • Book the airport that matches your first hotel, not the cheapest fare, unless the saving is over about US$150.
  • Winter (Dec–Apr) is peak: book earlier and expect higher fares.
  • Check whether your fare includes a checked bag; some low-cost routes charge separately.

Land and sea entry

The only land border is with Haiti. Crossings at Jimaní (south) and Dajabón (north) are the ones travellers use, and both are daytime operations with paperwork on each side. This is not a casual border: check current security advice and your own government's guidance before planning a crossing, and do not cross after dark.

By sea, the main route is a cruise call. Ships dock at Santo Domingo, La Romana, Puerto Plata, Samaná and Punta Cana, and cruise passengers usually get a day ashore without a separate visa. There are also ferries between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, but service has changed hands and schedules over the years — confirm the current operator and sailing days before you build a trip around it.

  • Land border: Haiti only, at Jimaní and Dajabón.
  • Cruise ports: Santo Domingo, La Romana, Puerto Plata, Samaná, Punta Cana.
  • Ferry to Puerto Rico: confirm the operator and schedule before relying on it.

Arrival paperwork and costs

Most visitors get a tourist card on arrival; for air passengers it is normally included in the ticket, and the departure tax is likewise usually built into the fare. Rules and fees change, so confirm the current position before you fly and keep the e-ticket receipt. Passport validity, onward-ticket and length-of-stay rules are covered on the visa page.

At the airport, expect a short immigration queue and, at Punta Cana in high season, a longer one. Official airport taxis use fixed zone rates posted at the desk; agree the price before you get in, or pre-book a transfer through your hotel. Ride-hailing apps work in Santo Domingo and Santiago but are less reliable at Punta Cana.

Buy a local SIM or eSIM at the airport or in town if you want data for maps and transfers. Cash in Dominican pesos is useful for taxis and small purchases; US dollars are widely accepted in resort areas but the exchange rate is worse.

  • Keep your return ticket and accommodation address handy for immigration.
  • Use the official taxi desk or a pre-booked transfer, not an unmarked driver.
  • Have some pesos for the first day; airport ATMs can run out or charge high fees.

Practical notes

Hurricane season runs roughly June to November, with the highest risk from August to October. Flights are rarely cancelled far ahead, but a storm can delay or reroute you at short notice, so travel insurance that covers weather disruption is worth having on a trip in those months.

Arriving late at night is workable at Punta Cana and Santo Domingo, where airport transfers run around the clock, but it is harder on the north coast and in Samaná, where some guesthouses stop accepting check-ins after about 22:00. If you land after dark, book the first night near the airport or arrange the transfer in advance.

The country is on UTC−4 all year, so there is no clock change to plan around. Plugs are types A and B at 120 V, the same as the US and Canada; UK, Irish, Australian and New Zealand travellers need an adapter.

Questions people ask

What is the best airport to fly into for Dominican Republic?

Punta Cana (PUJ) for a resort beach trip, Santo Domingo (SDQ) for the capital and the south, and Puerto Plata (POP) or Santiago (STI) for the north coast. Choose by your first hotel: the wrong airport can add three to five hours of driving.

How long is the flight to Dominican Republic from the US, UK, Canada, Australia and NZ?

About 2 hours from Miami, 4 from New York, 4.5–5 from Toronto, and 9–10 from London with one stop. From Australia and New Zealand it is 24 hours or more with at least one connection. Times are 2026 estimates for the air segment only.

Can I enter Dominican Republic by land or sea?

By land only from Haiti, at the Jimaní and Dajabón crossings, which are daytime operations — check current security advice first. By sea, cruise ships call at Santo Domingo, La Romana, Puerto Plata, Samaná and Punta Cana. A ferry to Puerto Rico exists but confirm the current operator and schedule (check).

Do I need a tourist card or pay a departure tax?

For air arrivals the tourist card is normally included in your ticket, and the departure tax is usually built into the fare too. Rules and fees change, so confirm the current position before you fly and keep your e-ticket receipt.

Which airlines fly to Punta Cana and Santo Domingo?

US carriers fly nonstop from East Coast and Florida hubs, Canadian carriers serve Toronto and Montreal, and European travellers usually connect via Madrid, Miami or New York. Charter and package flights add capacity in winter. Check current routes and schedules before booking.

Is it cheaper to fly into Punta Cana or Santo Domingo?

Punta Cana usually has more capacity and package deals, so fares can be lower, but Santo Domingo is better if you are starting in the capital. Compare the fare plus the transfer cost, not the fare alone.

How do I get from the airport to my hotel?

Use the official airport taxi desk with posted zone rates, or pre-book a transfer through your hotel. Ride-hailing apps work in Santo Domingo and Santiago but are less reliable at Punta Cana. Agree the price before getting in.
