Dolores Hidalgo is the small Guanajuato town where the 1810 independence movement began, about an hour by bus from Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende or León. The centre is compact and walkable, the museums are cheap, and the town is known for talavera pottery and unusual ice cream. Most travellers see it in half a day; one night lets you catch the evening re-enactment of the Grito on the plaza.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes; the plaza, parish, independence museum and Casa de Hidalgo are all within a few blocks. For the pottery strip on Avenida José Alfredo Jiménez and the out-of-town wineries, take a taxi or drive. Buses between Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, León and Querétaro run from two small stations north of the river.
