Dodoma
Give Dodoma one night if you are passing between Dar es Salaam and Arusha; two nights only if you want the parliament, Lion Rock and the Kondoa rock art.
Dodoma is Tanzania's political capital, not its tourist capital. Since the 1970s it has absorbed ministries and parliament, but embassies, beaches and most safari departures stayed in Dar es Salaam. The city is low, hot and spread out, with a small centre, a handful of restaurants and few conventional sights: the earthquake-proof Bunge buildings are the landmark, but visits and photography are restricted, and Lion Rock is a steep half-day hike rather than a viewpoint you drive to. Most travellers see the city from a bus or train window. It works as a one-night break on the Dar es Salaam–Arusha road, or as a base for the Kondoa rock-art sites to the north.

Get around
Dala dala minibuses cover the city and are cheap; taxis are plentiful and Bolt operates. There are three bus stands: the city stand at Jamatini, Saba Saba for medium distances (Mpwapwa, Mvumi) and the long-distance stand near the parliament buildings. Bikes can be rented in town for about TSh 5,000 a day (2026 estimate). Distances are long and hot — take a taxi rather than walk between sights.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: 'Shikamoo' to elders, a handshake and small talk first; avoid: Rushing straight to business
- Hands: Right hand for eating, giving and receiving; avoid: Using the left hand
- Dress on Zanzibar: Cover shoulders and knees in town; avoid: Beachwear in Stone Town
- Photos: Ask first; pay agreed fees in Maasai bomas; avoid: Photographing women on Zanzibar without asking

Scams and watch-outs
- Hike Lion Rock in a group of at least four: muggings have been reported.
- Photography at the parliament buildings is restricted; permission is handled by letter in advance.
- Carry cash: not every ATM accepts foreign cards, and card use outside hotels is limited.
- The wet season (Dec–Apr) can make gravel roads to Iringa and Kondoa slow.
Dodoma is calm by big-city standards, but it is not a walking city after dark. Take taxis at night, hike Lion Rock only in a group, and keep valuables out of sight around the bus stands.
