Djerba
جربة
Give Djerba 2–3 nights: one for Houmt Souk and the fort, one for the beaches and lagoon, one for Guellala and the villages. Fewer and you are just at the pool.
Djerba is North Africa's largest island, joined to the mainland by a causeway and a ferry, and the south's main beach base. It is not a resort strip alone: Houmt Souk has a working market and a 14th-century fort, Guellala makes pottery, Erriadh carries the Djerbahood street art and the El Ghriba synagogue, and the west coast holds the Star Wars locations. Beaches and hotels cluster in the north-east around Sidi Mahrez and Midoun; the quiet, cheaper island is inland and on the west.

Get around
Taxis are the practical option: they are metered and drivers generally use the meter, but agree the fare for longer runs. Louages (shared vans) cover Houmt Souk–Midoun–Ajim cheaply. Bicycles and scooters rent in Houmt Souk and near Midoun; main roads are good and traffic is light outside towns, but side roads are often unpaved and unlit at night. Ride-hailing apps did not work on the island as of early 2024 (check).

Sleep
- Houmt Souk
- Market, fort and bus station on foot; the base if you are here to see the island, not to lie on a beach.
- Sidi Mahrez / north-east coast
- The resort zone: beach hotels, the lagoon and Djerba Explore within a short taxi ride.
- Midoun area
- Inland town with the golf course and the tourist zone; cheaper than the seafront, 10–15 min to the beach.
- Erriadh (Hara Sghira)
- Village base for Djerbahood and El Ghriba; hostels and guesthouses rather than resorts.
- Ajim and the west coast
- Ferry port, fish restaurants and the Star Wars sites; few beds, so day-trip it unless you want silence.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'aslema' or 'bonjour'; avoid: Kissing on the cheek unless offered
- Dress: Covered shoulders and knees in towns; avoid: Swimwear off the beach
- Bargaining: Friendly haggling in souks; avoid: Haggling in fixed-price shops
- Photos: Ask first; avoid: Police and military
Scams and watch-outs
- Taxis from the airport: insist on the meter or fix the price first.
- Only bottled water.
- July–August heat: plan sightseeing before 11:00 and after 16:00.
- Side roads are unlit after dark; do not cycle back from dinner.
- Souks: bargain hard, and walk away if the price does not move.
Djerba is one of Tunisia's calmer destinations and resort areas are well policed. The real risks are heat in summer, unlit side roads at night, and taxis or souk sellers quoting a price with no meter or no label: agree first.
