Add Dilijan for one or two nights as a forested mountain break between Yerevan and Georgia or Lake Sevan; skip it if your route is short and you'd rather spend that time at the lake.

Dilijan sits inside Dilijan National Park, in the wooded Aghstev valley at about 1,500 m, and is sometimes called Armenia's 'little Switzerland' for its pine-covered hills. The restored old town on Sharambeyan Street has 19th-century wooden-balcony houses, and the UWC Dilijan international school has brought new investment to what was a quiet Soviet-era resort town. Haghartsin and Goshavank monasteries sit a short drive away in the surrounding forest.

Get around

The town itself is small and walkable. Hire a taxi or join a shared tour for Haghartsin and Goshavank, each 15–20 minutes away. There is no rail link and no airport; a marshrutka or shared taxi from Yerevan takes about 1.5–2 hours via the Dilijan tunnel.
