Dildo
Go for one night, not a base: the name is the hook, but whale-watching, Dildo Island and the brewery fill a half-day. Skip if you are not already driving Route 80.
Dildo is a small Trinity Bay fishing town on the Avalon Peninsula, about 50 minutes by car from St. John's. The name draws visitors, but the real draw is the water: whale-watching tours, Dildo Island archaeology and a microbrewery with a museum. It works as a half-day or one-night stop on an Eastern Newfoundland loop, not a destination on its own.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Most tours and the brewery run May–Oct only; check dates before you book.
- Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on the highway.
- Book accommodation ahead in Jul–Aug; the town is small.
Dildo is a small, safe town. The real risks are weather and wildlife: dress for cold water and wind, and keep a safe distance from whales and icebergs on boat tours.
