Dieppe
Give Dieppe one full day and a night: beach, harbour, Saturday market and the 1942 raid museum. Two nights if you want the Avenue Verte by bike.
Dieppe is a working fishing and ferry port on the Normandy coast, about 2 hours from Paris by train and 4 hours from Newhaven by boat. It is the closest seaside town to Paris, with a pebble beach, a rebuilt 17th-century centre, brick architecture and a serious seafood restaurant scene. Most visitors pass through in a day; one night is enough to see it properly, two if you cycle the Avenue Verte.

Get around
The centre is small and walkable: beach, harbour, castle and old town are all within about 20 minutes on foot. Bikes can be hired for a few euros a day near the tourist office in the harbour area, useful for the Avenue Verte. Local buses cover the suburbs; a car is only worth it for the coast villages.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say 'bonjour madame/monsieur' on entering any shop, bus or office; avoid: Asking a question before saying bonjour — it is read as rude
- Cheek kisses (la bise): Follow the other person's lead; one to four kisses depending on region; avoid: Initiating la bise with strangers or in business
- Addressing people: Use 'vous' and titles until invited otherwise; avoid: First names and 'tu' with older people or staff
- Restaurants: Wait to be seated in restaurants; call the waiter 'monsieur' or 'madame'; avoid: 'Garçon', snapping fingers, asking for the bill before you are finished
- Conversation: Debate is a pleasure; food, politics and philosophy are fair game; avoid: Asking about salary or religion; loud voices on trains
- Dinner at a home: Bring flowers (not chrysanthemums), chocolates or a good bottle; arrive 10–15 minutes late; avoid: Cutting the tip off a cheese wedge or asking for ketchup
- Dress: Smart-casual in cities; covered shoulders in churches; avoid: Beachwear in town centres
Scams and watch-outs
- The beach is pebbles, not sand: bring shoes you can walk on.
- Many seafront restaurants and bars close or cut hours outside May–September.
- Ferry foot-passenger spaces on DFDS to Newhaven are limited: book ahead.
- The 1942 raid museum is only open mid-June to end of September, closed Tuesdays.
- Check the tourist office hours by season; it closes Sundays from October to March.
Dieppe is a small, safe town; the real risks are cold wind and rain off the Channel, slippery pebbles on the beach, and late-night bar crowds on Quai Henri IV at weekends.
