Didcot
Skip Didcot as a base unless you need the rail junction or the Railway Centre: 1 night, or a half-day stop between Oxford and Reading.
Didcot is a railway town on the Great Western main line, 45 min from London Paddington and 15 min from Oxford. Its one real sight is the Didcot Railway Centre, next to the station. Most travellers use it as a cheap bed for Oxford or a quick train stop, not as a destination.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Didcot Parkway is a through station: check the platform before boarding, fast trains do not all stop.
- Cheap Advance fares are often not sold to or from Didcot; a ticket to Oxford or Swindon that calls at Didcot can work out cheaper.
- The Railway Centre opens mainly at weekends and selected weekdays in summer: check the official site before travelling.
- Evening food options are limited outside the Orchard Centre and Broadway; kitchens close early on Sundays.
A low-risk town; the real issues are unlit footpaths between the station and the estates at night, level-crossing and platform edges, and drinking groups around Broadway pubs on weekend nights.
