Dhulikhel
धुलिखेल
Give Dhulikhel one night, two if you hike to Namo Buddha: a real Newar hill town with a temple square and Himalayan views, 2 h from Kathmandu.
Dhulikhel sits at about 1,550 m where the Araniko Highway to Tibet meets the B.P. Highway to the eastern Terai, roughly 30 km east of Kathmandu. It is a working Newar town with a temple-lined square, not a viewpoint built for tourists, and it gives you the same Himalayan panorama as Nagarkot with a town attached. Most travellers come for one night, a sunrise view and the half-day walk to Namo Buddha; hikers on the Kathmandu Valley Cultural Trekking Trail pass through on foot.

The town is small and walkable: the bus stop, the square and the main lodges are within 20 minutes on foot. The Kali Temple sits at the top of the hill and the Shiva Temple down in a gorge over 2 km (1.2 mi) southeast of the square, so plan those as separate walks. For Namo Buddha, Bhattedanda or a resort outside town, take a local bus or hire a taxi or jeep. The town is small and walkable: the bus stop, the square and the main lodges are within 20 minutes on foot. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Namaste with palms together; a handshake between men in business; avoid: Hugging or kissing in public
- Temples and stupas: Walk clockwise, spin prayer wheels clockwise, shoes off at shrines; avoid: Touching offerings; entering Hindu-only areas
- Food: Right hand, accept refills gracefully; avoid: Sharing food you have bitten; stepping over food
- Feet and heads: Keep feet flat and away from people and altars; avoid: Touching anyone's head
- Photos: Ask first; offer to show the picture; avoid: Photographing cremations or rituals without permission
- On the trail: Pass mani walls and chortens on the left (keeping them on your right); give way to yaks on the mountain side; avoid: Standing on the drop side when animals pass
Scams and watch-outs
- There is no currency exchange in town: bring rupees, or use the Nabil Bank ATM at the B.P./Araniko junction.
- Buses from Kathmandu's Ratna Park take about 2 h and cost under Rs100; taxis from Kathmandu cost far more, so agree the fare first.
- Mornings are clear and afternoons cloud over in the hills: set the alarm for sunrise if the mountains are the point.
- Power and hot water can be intermittent in cheaper guesthouses; ask before you pay.
Dhulikhel is a small, calm town and feels safe by day and evening. The real risks are the highway, unlit paths after dark, and mountain weather: walk the Namo Buddha trail in daylight, and treat the road as traffic, not a footpath.
