Dhofar is Oman's southern region, cut off from the north by the Empty Quarter and reached almost always by a 1.5-hour flight to Salalah. It has two seasons that feel like two different places: the khareef (June–September), when the mountains turn green and the coast fogs over, and the dry winter (October–March), when the beaches are clear and the diving and birdwatching seasons run. Base in Salalah, hire a car, and treat the coast road west and the mountain road east as day trips.

  • Fog and mist cut visibility outside Salalah, especially in the khareef; camels and livestock wander onto roads — stay within the speed limit.
  • Dehydration and heat exhaustion are real in the dry season; carry water and food, as eateries outside the larger towns are almost nonexistent.
  • Three venomous snakes live in Dhofar (Arabian cobra, puff adder, saw-scaled viper); wear boots on trails and do not turn over rocks.

Salalah and the coastal plain
Khareef (southwest monsoon) June–September brings cool, wet, foggy weather; the dry season October–March is warm and clear.
Dhofar Mountains
Green and misty in the khareef; viewpoints are best in the dry season. The rain does not cross the mountains — the desert beyond is arid.
Interior and Empty Quarter edge
Desert heat most of the year; go in the cooler months and carry water.

The khareef is Dhofar's high season for Gulf visitors and fills Salalah hotels; the dry winter is the season for diving and birdwatching.
