Give Deva one night: climb to the fortress in the morning, see the Magna Curia museum, then move on to Hunedoara castle or Hațeg.
Deva is the county seat of Hunedoara County and a working Transylvanian town of about 61,000 people, built under a hill topped by a 13th-century fortress. Almost everything worth seeing sits within a 20-minute walk of the centre, so it works as a single-night stop between Timișoara and Sibiu, or as a base for the Hunedoara castle and the Retezat mountains. It is not a destination in itself for a first Romania trip.

Get around
The centre is walkable: fortress stairs, Magna Curia museum, the Orthodox cathedral and the main square are all within about 20 minutes on foot. City buses are cheap and paid in cash to the driver, but run infrequently. Taxis are metered and short hops across town cost a few lei. A rental car is only worth it for day trips to Hunedoara, Hațeg or Retezat.
