Depoe Bay
Give Depoe Bay one night, or a half-day stop on a Highway 101 drive: the harbor, the sea wall and the whale center take 2–4 hours.
Depoe Bay is a one-street town of about 1,200 people on the Central Oregon Coast, built around a narrow harbor that is often called the smallest navigable one anywhere. Highway 101 runs straight through it, so most visitors see it in a few hours between Newport and Lincoln City. Whale watching from the sea wall and the state parks north and south are the reasons to stop; the town itself is small enough to walk in 20 minutes.

Get around
Walk the town: the harbor, sea wall and shops are within about 15 minutes on foot, and a pedestrian underpass crosses Highway 101 at the bridge. A car is needed for the state parks and for Newport or Lincoln City. Parking along 101 is free but fills on summer weekends.
