What to do in Denver on a rainy day

Denver's rain is rarely an all-day washout. Summer storms build over the Front Range in the afternoon and pass in an hour or two, so the practical move is a short indoor block rather than a whole day indoors. Winter brings snow more often than rain, and the city clears it quickly.

The strongest cluster sits around Civic Center: the Denver Art Museum, the History Colorado Center and the United States Mint are all within a few minutes' walk of each other, with the Denver Central Library nearby. If the weather turns, you can move between them without getting soaked.

For a longer wet day, head to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and the Denver Botanic Gardens in City Park, or stay downtown for a brewery tour, a show at the Denver Performing Arts Complex, or a film. Union Station is a good base: it is covered, has food and drink, and connects to the light rail.

Most of these stops sit within about 2 km of each other downtown. Civic Center Park is the centre: the Art Museum and the Mint face it, History Colorado is a block south, and the Central Library is a block east. Union Station is about 1.5 km north-west, a 20-minute walk or a short ride on the free MallRide shuttle along 16th Street.

The Museum of Nature & Science and the Botanic Gardens are in City Park, roughly 5 km east of downtown — a short drive or a bus ride. Light rail lines run from Union Station and downtown stations toward the suburbs; check the RTD map for the line closest to your hotel.

Denver is at about 1,600 m, and rain days are a good time to slow down. Altitude can make you tire faster and feel headachy; drink more water than usual and go easy on alcohol for the first day or two.

Public transport is workable for a wet day. The free MallRide shuttle runs along 16th Street between Union Station and Civic Center, and RTD light rail and buses cover the wider city. A day pass is the simplest ticket if you plan several hops (check current fares).

Tipping is expected in the US: 18–22% at sit-down restaurants and US$1–2 a drink. Prices in shops and menus are shown before sales tax, which is added at the till.

If you are travelling with children, the nature and science museum and the children's section of the Central Library are the easiest wet-day stops. For a quieter option, the art museum and the botanic conservatory work well for couples.

Denver gets most of its rain in late spring and summer, often as brief afternoon thunderstorms. Mornings are usually the driest part of the day, so plan outdoor sights early and keep the indoor list for the afternoon. Winter precipitation mostly falls as snow, and the city is used to clearing it.

If your trip is flexible, late spring and early autumn are generally the most comfortable for a mix of indoor and outdoor plans (check seasonal conditions). Summer afternoons are the ones most likely to send you inside; winter days can be cold but often sunny.

For a wet day, the Civic Center cluster is the safest bet: several indoor stops within a short walk, with food and drink nearby if the rain settles in.
