Denmark, Western Australia
Denmark
Give Denmark 2 nights with a car: Elephant Rocks and Greens Pool, Ocean Beach at sunset, wineries between. Without a car, skip it.
Denmark is a small south-coast town of about 2,600 people, 4–5 h drive from Perth and under an hour from Albany. The town itself is a short walk; the reason to come is the coast at William Bay and the wineries inland, both of which need a car. Two nights covers the beaches and a cellar door loop without rushing.

The town centre is small enough to walk. Everything else — Greens Pool, Elephant Rocks, Ocean Beach, the wineries — needs a car; there is no town bus. Greens Pool is about 25 km (16 mi) and Ocean Beach about 10 km (6.2 mi) from the centre, both rideable by bike if you are fit. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No car means no coast and no wineries: the town alone is half a day.
- Southern Ocean water is cold year-round; swimming is short and brisk even in summer.
- Rocks at Elephant Rocks and Greens Pool can be slippery when wet; swim with care.
- Cell coverage is good in town and patchy on rural roads and in the national park.
- Short-stay houses fill up in December–January; book ahead.
Denmark is a low-crime country town and safe for tourists. The real risks are the cold Southern Ocean, slippery granite at Greens Pool and Elephant Rocks, wildlife on rural roads at dusk, and long drives after wine tasting.
