Delphos
Delphos, Ohio
Skip Delphos as a base: it is a 2–3 hour stop on US-30 between Lima and Van Wert, with one hotel and no rail. Sleep in Lima and drive in.
Delphos is a small northwest Ohio town of about 6,700 people, split between Van Wert and Allen counties and founded in the 1830s. Its draw is a compact set of 19th-century buildings and a canal museum, all reachable in a short walk from Main Street. Almost everyone arrives by car on US-30, and almost everyone leaves the same day.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No passenger rail and no local transit: without a car you are stuck.
- Small-town hours: the canal museum opens only Thursday mornings and weekend afternoons, so a weekday-afternoon arrival finds it shut.
- Winter ice on US-30 and SR-66 is the real hazard; plan daylight driving in Jan–Feb.
- Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on the county roads around it.
Very low street crime; the real risks are winter ice on US-30, deer at dusk on county roads, and long empty stretches between towns. Lock the car and keep fuel above a quarter tank.
