Délı̨nę
Go only if you have a reason: 2 nights, fly-in, no roads. August for the spiritual gathering; otherwise a fishing or culture trip.
Délı̨nę is a fly-in Sahtú Dene community of about 500 people on the west shore of Great Bear Lake, 544 km northwest of Yellowknife. There are no roads in. You come for lake trout fishing, the Franklin-era Fort Franklin site, Prophet Ayah's grave and the August gathering — not for a conventional sightseeing list. Two nights is the practical minimum once you have paid for the flight.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Fly-in only: no road access. Miss the flight and you miss the trip.
- Seats on the Yellowknife run are few and fill in summer — book weeks ahead.
- Groceries at the Northern Store and Great Bear Co-op are very expensive; bring what you can.
- Mobile coverage is limited and can drop; do not rely on it for work.
- August is gathering time: respect ceremonies and ask before photographing people or graves.
- Summer has long daylight and heavy mosquitoes; pack a head net.
A small, safe community where the real risks are the flight, the weather and the water. Tell someone your plan before going out on Great Bear Lake, and carry layers even in July.
