Defiance
One night is enough: see the fort site and the river confluence, eat, then push on along US-24. Two nights only if you fish or cycle the Maumee.
Defiance is a small Maumee River city in Northwest Ohio, about 89 km southwest of Toledo and 76 km northeast of Fort Wayne on US-24. It is the seat of Defiance County and holds the site of Fort Defiance, built in 1794 by Anthony Wayne, plus the outline of the larger Fort Winchester of 1812. Sights are few and spread along the river, so most travellers stop for a night between Toledo and Fort Wayne rather than base here.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Rideshare and taxi supply is limited, especially after 21:00: arrange your ride before you drink.
- Winter ice on the Maumee and US-24 lake-effect snow can close lanes; check Ohio road conditions before a night drive.
- The Dey Road Bridge is closed to cars; cross on foot only.
- Many downtown businesses close on Sundays.
Small-town safe by US standards; the real issues are winter driving on US-24, thin late-night rideshare and river currents near the dam. Lock your car and keep to lit streets downtown after dark.
