Treat Deer Lake as a one-night airport and highway base, not a destination: 1 night, then drive 30 min to Gros Morne or push north on Highway 430.
Deer Lake is a town of about 5,200 people on the Trans-Canada Highway, 50 km north of Corner Brook, and the closest town of any size to Gros Morne National Park. Its airport (YDF) is the main gateway for western Newfoundland and the Great Northern Peninsula. Almost nobody comes for the town itself: you land, sleep, pick up a car and leave. Give it one night on arrival or departure, or use it as a fuel and grocery stop between Corner Brook and the northern peninsula.

Get around
You need a car. The town is spread along the highway and the airport is outside the centre; there is no useful local transit. Rental cars should be booked ahead in summer, and one-way drop fees apply if you leave the island by ferry. Taxis and airport shuttles cover the short hop into town and to Corner Brook.
