Děčín
Give Děčín one night, not a day trip: the castle, the Elbe valley and the sandstone hills need a full day plus a morning.
Děčín sits on the Elbe where the river cuts through the sandstone hills, 1 h 30 min by train from Prague and 46 min from Dresden. The castle and old town are on the left bank; the main station, town hall and most shops are on the right bank, so plan on crossing the river at least twice. It works as a one-night stop between Prague and Saxony, or as a two-night base for hiking in Bohemian Switzerland. Costs are low, English is patchy outside hotels, and the city is safe.
