Debrecen is Hungary's second city and the seat of Hajdú-Bihar County, on the Great Plain about 2.5 hours by train from Budapest. It is a university city with a compact centre: the Great Church and Déri Museum sit within a few minutes of each other, and the wooded Nagyerdő park with the baths, zoo and stadium is a tram ride away. Most travellers see it in a day, or use it as a stop toward Nyíregyháza and the eastern border.

Get around
The centre is walkable: Great Church to Déri Museum is under 5 minutes. DKV runs two tram lines, five trolleybus and about sixty bus lines; tram 1 links the railway station, the centre, Nagyerdő and the university. Buy tickets from machines or on board (on-board costs more). Budapest tickets are not valid here.
