De Fryske Marren is a lakes-and-canals municipality in southwest Friesland, made in 2014 from four older districts, with about 51,000 residents. There is no train station inside it: buses run from Heerenveen, Sneek and Leeuwarden, and a car or rented bike is the practical way to move between Lemmer, Sloten, Balk and Joure. The one sight that justifies the trip on its own is the Wouda pumping station at Lemmer, a UNESCO site.
