Dayton
Give Dayton two nights: one full day for the free Air Force museum and Carillon Park, half a day for the Wright sites downtown.
Dayton is the Wright brothers' home town and the centre of the Dayton-Springfield-Sidney metro (about 1.07 million people) in the Miami-Scioto basins of southwest Ohio. Its draw is aviation history: the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson, the largest military aviation museum in the world, plus the Wright Cycle Company and Huffman Prairie units of Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park. The city is a car town with a compact downtown core; two nights covers the aviation sights, and a third day opens up Yellow Springs or the region's rail trails.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: I-75 runs north-south through downtown, I-70 east-west past the airport, and I-675 bypasses the east side. The Greater Dayton RTA runs buses and electric trolley buses in Montgomery County, but you must load their app or buy a reusable card at a transit centre before boarding — no cash in the slot. Downtown to the Air Force museum is about 15–20 min by car.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- The Air Force museum sits on an active base: access is through Gate 28B and the museum can close with no notice.
- Huffman Prairie Flying Field is closed on Wednesdays and is also on base land (Gate 16A).
- The Greyhound station is out at Trotwood, 5136 Salem Avenue, with limited local bus links — plan a taxi or rideshare.
- Summer heat and humidity make midday walking unpleasant; shift outdoor sights to morning.
- Prices in shops and restaurants are shown before Ohio sales tax.
Dayton is a normal US mid-size city: downtown and the museum districts are fine by day, and the usual advice applies after dark — stay in lit, busy blocks, keep the car locked, and don't leave anything visible in it.
