Dawlish
Give Dawlish one night, not three: a beach, the sea-wall railway and the black swans fill a half-day, then move on to Torquay or Exeter.
Dawlish is a small South Devon seaside town of about 15,000 people, 19 km from Exeter on the Exeter–Plymouth railway. The draw is the stretch of track that runs along the sea wall above the beach, the black swans on Dawlish Water, and a mild, sunny climate. It is a half-day town with a good beach at Dawlish Warren next door; most travellers use it as a stop between Exeter and Torquay rather than a base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Storm surges and easterly winds can throw waves over the sea wall and close the railway: check before travelling in winter.
- The sea-wall line floods in rough weather; trains can be replaced by buses at short notice.
- Mobile signal is patchy: 5G from EE and Three, weaker from O2 and Vodafone (as of 2023).
- Parking near the seafront fills early on summer weekends.
A low-crime seaside town; the real risks are rough seas and waves over the sea wall, slippery rocks, and summer parking and beach crowds. Standard UK precautions apply.
