Davis
Davis, Oklahoma
Give Davis one night, two at most: Turner Falls plus a fried pie stop fills a day, and the town is a sleep-and-eat base, not a sightseeing city.
Davis is a town of about 2,700 people at the foot of the Arbuckle Mountains, sitting on I-35 between Oklahoma City and Dallas. Almost everyone comes for one of two things: Turner Falls Park, the waterfall and swimming hole the city has owned for about a century, or a break in the drive. The town itself is a short strip of Main Street, a casino, a chocolate factory and a fried-pie stand. One night covers it; two if you want a full day in the water and a second at the Chickasaw National Recreation Area near Sulphur.

Get around
You need a car. I-35 runs past town at Exit 55, US-77 links the interstate to the centre, and State Highway 7 goes east to Sulphur. Turner Falls is a few miles south of the main town near the I-35/US-77 interchange. There is no useful local bus; taxis and rideshare are thin, so plan to drive everywhere.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Turner Falls charges entry per person and the rate changes by season; check the park site before you go.
- Summer weekends at the falls fill up and the park can close entry once it is full — arrive before mid-morning.
- Swim only in marked areas; the rocks are slick and currents under the falls are stronger than they look.
- Some Main Street restaurants keep short or irregular hours — call or check before driving over.
- Summer heat and humidity are real: carry water, and watch for ticks and chiggers on trails.
Davis is a small, low-crime town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are driving I-35 in ice or storms, summer heat, and slick rocks and strong water at Turner Falls — swim in marked areas only.
